Leslie Robinson

Author - Dartmouth College

Leslie Robinson teaches financial accounting in the MBA and Business Bridge programs. She is among Poets and Quants' 40 best business school professors under the age of 40. Her research interests include the interaction of tax and accounting policy, and her expertise centers on the tax and accounting issues associated with multinational operations.

Katrina Welch

Tax Executives Inststute

When it comes to intrigue and problematic tax law issues, Welch cites one key moment in her career—TI’s acquisition of National Semiconductor, the largest deal in company history. What was involved in that acquisition? Not much—just strategic negotiations, crafting the transaction, and integrating major aspects of the two companies, such as personnel, government audits, financial reporting, and compliance.

Monisha Santamaria

KPMG

Monisha Santamaria recently joined KPMG as principal in the firm’s Washington National Tax practice. Previously, Monisha served as a Legislation Counsel for the Joint Committee of Taxation, assisting congressional tax-writing committees and members of Congress with the development and analysis of legislative proposals. Monisha is an active member of the tax profession. She serves as a vice-chair of the American Bar Association Section of Taxation’s Partnership Committee. She previously taught an advanced partnership tax course at the Loyola Law School and has spoken and published extensively on a variety of tax law issues. Monisha has been recognized as one of the top lawyers under 40 in the American Bar Association.

Kevin Markle

Discussant - Michigan State University

Kevin is joining Broad after 6 years at the University of Iowa. He obtained his PhD from the University of North Carolina in 2010 (where he also got his B. Sc. several years earlier), and has previously held faculty positions at Dartmouth College and the University of Waterloo. He has taught both financial accounting and tax classes in both traditional and online programs, and looks forward to teaching tax in the master’s program and a research seminar in the doctoral program at MSU. Kevin's research focuses on international tax and has been published in The Accounting Review, The Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Accounting Research, and Contemporary Accounting Research.

Si Cheng

Author - Syracuse University

Si Cheng is an Associate Professor of Finance at Syracuse University, Whitman School of Management. Her research is in empirical asset pricing, and centers on two main themes: investment and delegated asset management.

Robert McDonald

Discussant - Northwestern University

obert McDonald is Gaylord Freeman Distinguished Chair in Banking a Professor of Finance. He has been a faculty member at Kellogg since 1984 and also served as Finance department chair and and Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and Research. Before joining Kellogg, he was a faculty member at Boston University and has been a visiting professor at the University of Chicago. He has taught courses in derivatives, corporate finance, taxation, and data analytics.

Dominik Rosch

Dominik Roesch is an expert on stock market efficiency and how close market prices are to fundamental values. He also can discuss how different markets work, as well as topics related to arbitrage and market liquidity, including whether arbitrage improves liquidity.

Justin Pierce

Discussant - Federal Reserve

I am an economist at the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. My research focuses on the implications of changes in international trade policy for individuals, firms, and regions. Prior to beginning my graduate studies, I worked in the private sector, advising domestic and foreign firms involved in antidumping and safeguard investigations.

Carlyle Burd

Author - Boston University

I am a fifth-year PhD candidate in Accounting at Boston University. My research focuses on topics in taxation, disclosure, and international trade policy. In particular, I study how tax-related corporate disclosures impact users of financial statement information, and my research in this area has been invited to present to the Securities and Exchange Commission. My job market paper applies textual analysis to identify and study disclosures and outcomes related to the Section 301 China tariffs.

Andrew Greenland

Andrew Greenland is an Associate Professor of Economics. His primary research is in international economics.

Doug Shackelford - Emeritus Faculty and Former Dean

Keynote Speaker -

A 1980 Carolina graduate and a faculty member since 1990, Doug served as the first associate dean of MBA@UNC, Carolina’s online MBA program, from 2010 until 2014. He was senior associate dean for academic affairs from 2003-2007, and associate dean of the Master of Accounting Program from 1998-2002. He also founded the UNC Tax Center in 2001 and served as its director until he was named dean in 2014 until his retirement in 2022. Under Doug’s leadership, UNC Kenan-Flagler reached record enrollments in its Undergraduate Business, Master of Accounting and MBA programs. The school also started the popular MAC program in an online format and bolstered its MBA@UNC program, leveraging innovative technology to enable students to earn a Carolina degree in all parts of the world. This fall, the school again expanded its access to a Carolina education, launching the Charlotte Executive MBA program in Uptown Charlotte. As part of its centennial celebration in 2019, UNC Kenan-Flagler created 20 new scholarships and fellowships to continue attracting talented students and furthering its commitment to accessibility. The school recently surpassed its $400 million goal in the Campaign for Carolina to fuel groundbreaking research, hire new faculty and better prepare the leaders of tomorrow. Soon UNC Kenan-Flagler will begin construction on the new Steven D. Bell Hall, a state-of-the-art facility designed for teaching, research and collaboration. This new building, made possible by private gifts and the N.C. General Assembly, will allow the school to expand its undergraduate business enrollment by at least 50% to meet the growing needs of our state. Doug’s tenure at UNC Kenan-Flagler is marked by numerous achievements that leave the school in a position of strength. We are grateful for everything he has accomplished and wish him well in his next endeavors.

Ann Holley

Panelist - KPMG

Ann joined KPMG’s Charlotte office in 1994. She currently serves as a Partner in KPMG’s Washington National Tax (WNT) State and Local Tax (SALT) and the National Leader of the Income and Franchise Tax Practice group. From 1994 to 1996, Ann was a member of KPMG’s financial services federal tax practice. During this period, she prepared federal and state income tax returns and financial statement tax provisions. In 1996, she transferred to the SALT practice in Atlanta, focusing on restructuring projects, audit defense and consulting. Ann transferred to WNT in 2001 and led the WNT SALT group from 2007 to 2011. Ann is a frequent speaker on various state and local tax issues and serves as a firm resource on financial state provision issues.

Jim Albertus

Received Outstanding Paper Award at 2020 Midwest Finance Association Annual Meeting for research with Brent Glover and Oliver Levine. Presented research at the 2020 NBER SI Entrepreneurship meeting on subscription line use by private equity funds. Presented my paper on foreign tax arbitrage at the fall 2018 NBER Taxation of Business Income Conference. Research on the 2017 Tax Cut and Jobs Act is on the 2018 NBER SI Capital Markets and the Economy program.

Stephen Glaeser

Moderator - Kenan Flagler Business School

Stephen Glaeser researches issues at the intersection of accounting and economics. He studies how innovative firms trade-off the benefits of communicating with investors against the costs of publicly revealing information about partially non-excludable innovations. He also is interested in how taxation affects real decisions and how imperfect information gives rise to agency conflicts. He teaches courses in managerial and financial accounting.

Jennifer Blouin

Moderator/Author - University of Pennsylvania

Professor Jennifer Blouin’s research centers on the role of taxation in firm decision making. Professor Blouin studies taxation in many contexts, including capital structure, asset pricing, payout policy and multinational firm behavior. Professor Blouin’s research has been published in top-tier academic journals including Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, National Tax Journal and the Journal of the American Taxation Association. Professor Blouin teaches taxation to undergraduate, MBA, and PhD students. She received her PhD in Accounting from the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill and her BS from Indiana University – Bloomington.

John Gallemore

Moderator - Kenan Flagler Business School

John Gallemore studies how firms’ economic and financial reporting behavior are shaped by corporate tax policy and enforcement. His research has been published in top accounting journals, such as the Journal of Accounting & Economics, Journal of Accounting Research and Contemporary Accounting Research. His research and expertise have been featured by media outlets such as The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and Bloomberg. Dr. Gallemore teaches Strategic Cost Analysis and Performance Evaluation in the full-time MBA program.

Mary Margaret Frank

Moderator - University of Virginia

Professor of Business Administration Mary Margaret Frank teaches in the Accounting area at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business. In addition to holding the John Tyler Professor of Business Administration, Frank is also an academic director for Darden's Institute for Business in Society (IBiS). Her current academic interests include the integration of business principles and public policy objectives, cross-sector collaboration and leadership, and sustainable investing. These interests began with her research on the effects of tax, financial accounting and patent reporting on the strategy of corporate management, investors, and entrepreneurs.

Scott Dyreng

Moderator - Duke University

Scott Dyreng is Professor of Accounting at Duke University. His research interests are in corporate tax avoidance, international taxation, and accounting for income taxes. He has published in The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Financial Economics, among others. He teaches managerial accounting to graduate students, and has received the Excellence in Teaching Award in the Duke MMS program three times. He received his PhD at the University of North Carolina in 2008. He holds Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in accounting from Brigham Young University.

Jeff Hoopes

Moderator - Kenan Flagler Business School

Jeff Hoopes studies how taxpayers respond to tax laws and changes in tax enforcement. He examines issues at the intersection of accounting, public economics and finance. He has expertise in both corporate and individual taxation as well as tax administration and compliance. He teaches classes that deal with taxes and business strategy, and how tax policy affects taxpayer decisions and the economy. Dr. Hoopes’ research has been published in the Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Law and Economics, Journal of Public Economics, The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, Management Science, xmv American Economic Journal: Economic Policy and National Tax Journal. He serves as the research director of the UNC Tax Center.

Ed Maydew

Edward Maydew’s teaching and research interests include taxation and accounting and their roles in economic decisions. He is senior executive director of the UNC Tax Center. His research is published in the leading academic journals in his field, including Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Accounting Research, Review of Accounting Studies, Contemporary Accounting Research, Management Science, Journal of Public Economics, National Tax Journal, Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory and Journal of the American Taxation Association.
